LEARNING ACTIVITIES
KIDS LEARN BEST THROUGH HANDS-ON & PLAY-BASED ACTIVITIES
Get ready for so many learning activities!
Everything is learning in early childhood. Play is learning. Creating is learning. Working with your hands is learning.
We don’t have to step very far to make a case that all activities are learning activities, but I know you want some sort of distinction.
This page is filled with all my favorite learning activities: Hands-on. Play-based. Full of movement, various learning styles, and engagement.
Let’s look at all the math, literacy, and science activities on Busy Toddler.

When working with kids in early childhood, remember a few things:
- Exposure is half the process.
- Background knowledge is key.
- Mastery is something for LATER.
We aren’t trying to force our kids into learning something they aren’t ready for – instead we just want to expose them to it.
Experience and exposure. Make that your mission.
The name of the game is background knowledge so when they are asked to learn a skill, they have a foundation built by us to draw from.
Mastery will come for our kids, but that might not be today. Remember not to push them. They’ll get it when they are ready.
Learning activities should always be play-based and hands-on.
- Drop the worksheets.
- Step away from the printable.
- Put down the workbook.
These are one-dimensional tools and we are not raising one-dimensional kids.
Play is learning.
Never forget that play is the highest form of learning our kids can do.
Play beats all the learning activities (says the woman with a blog full of activities…).
