A seriously simple quick and easy phone number activity

Inside: Here is a seriously easy way to help preschoolers and kindergarteners learn with a phone number activity.

How do you teach a child their phone number?

Kids need to learn their phone number.

They need to learn it for independence, for safety, and just because. Seriously, think about it. They should know their home (or parent’s cell) phone number.

We can’t forget to teach kids phone numbers even though we adults don’t do this anymore – we use our contacts list. Kids don’t have a contacts list (and hopefully won’t for many years) so help them learn phone numbers little by little.

Use this phone number activity as a place to start.

If you don’t have a home phone number, pick one cell phone number as the number to remember above all others.

For photographing the phone number activity, I obviously couldn’t share my number with the whole Internet so I borrowed Jenny’s number instead.

I chose my phone number to be The Number my kids would learn first since I handle most play date and friend activities – it made sense for our family.

When should a child know their phone number?

I started this activity at age 5 – my daughter is in preschool and has an understanding of numbers, numerals, and sequence.

She has a basic understanding of phones as well and knows that each phone has a specific number to call it.

The background knowledge is there for her to do this activity.

Here’s how to set up this easy phone number activity:

Materials:

• Dot stickers
• White Butcher paper
• Red marker
• Wall safe tape (I like painter’s tape)

On your butcher paper, write your phone number in large bubble / block letters.

Take several sheets of dot stickers and write the digits in your phone number. Mix up the order.

Start by “signing” your phone number

I know we can’t all have a Jenny-like phone number, but make up a simple melody to your phone number.

Attaching your number to some sort of tune helps kids learn it faster – it’s why we can learn the lyrics to songs on the radio but could never remember quadratic equations.

Let your child match the numbers to the numbers – just that easy!

In the name of giving familiarity with your phone number and a hands-on experience with it, have your child match the dot sticker numbers to the large block letters.

Don’t worry if your child takes a break during this – leave the activity up as an option for them to bounce back and forth to. They’ll choose to do it later (that’s exactly what my daughter did – this lived on our wall for three days).
