My favorite way to entertain kids: a simple rainbow pouring station.
There just isn’t a simpler way to keep the kids busy: make them a rainbow pouring station ASAP. Trust me on this one. The pouring station is one of the simplest, most amazing kids activities to set up – and it takes about a hot second to put it together.

Rainbow pouring station is the best activity!
My kids have been doing this activity for years.
This was back in 2015 when my oldest was 25 months old.
Here’s my youngest trying it inside….
And again at 2….
He’s three now and this still his favorite activity – of course, these aren’t the only times we’ve done a pouring station. Pouring stations are a STAPLE of my house – these are just the three other times I blogged about it.

There’s nothing easier than this set up
Putting together a Rainbow Pouring Station couldn’t be simpler:
The Set up:
I do this activity is a storage container – this one is 41 quarts and I bought it at Target. You can also do this in a water table outside OR in the bathtub.
I grab a bunch of measuring cups, jars, and scoops for the kids to pour, transfer, and experiment with.
There’s no right or wrong materials here – just grab what you have on hand. You have plenty of supplies for this in your house right now.
Just a fun little optional twist for this pouring station
I had put four large containers of water out dyed with red, blue, yellow, and green food coloring.
I use regular food coloring from the grocery store – and just a few drops in each container. I’ve never had a problem with the water then staining as a result – the color is so diluted.
This little twist was awesome for my kids and led to so much exploring and experimenting.
The amount of learning is SO HIGH in Rainbow Pouring Station
My kids are learning so much here:
- Capacity
- Volume
- Pouring Skills
- Displacement
- Whirlpools/Vortex
- Grip strength
On this specific day, my daughter was obsessed with displacement.
“Mom!!! Look at all this empty space in the jar but when I put my hand it, it fills it up!”
That’s displacement. That’s a child learning by doing. That’s hands-on learning and it is EVERYTHING.
How this activity goes…
Of course, the water was brown by the end.. but that was more than 30 minutes later!
Every now and then, I’d go back to the bin and remove all the jars and cups to tip and pour the water into them again. This resets the play and the kids can start again.
This is the best activity.
Try setting up a rainbow pouring station… it is one of the best activities you’ll ever make.

I went to a Montessori preschool and I remember having a station sort of like this. I loved it. As an adult it seems boring but as a kid, it was so much fun. One of the items was a dropper where you filled up the dropper and transferred the colored water so you could see if you spilt a drop.
