An oatmeal baking station is exactly the right activity
We have recently fallen in love with oatmeal sensory bins. They are fantastic, amazing, and the stuff easy toddler activity dreams are made of. Making an oatmeal baking station was the next logical step – and trust me, it was everything.

Why make an oatmeal baking station?
Because it’s awesome, that’s why.
Need more than that? Ok, fine.
Sensory bins are amazing and the stuff toddler learning is made of. When a child is interacting with a sensory bin they are engaging in a type of serious and significant learning that we adults could only dream of.
The math skills, life skills, play skills, and self control skills that a child learns through sensory bins is something like out of an activities fairy tale.

How do you make a baking bin?
A “baking station” is one of my favorite sensory set ups because it opens the activity up to the unlimited imagination of children.
The child is give a few supplies to add to the oatmeal and their imagination, and the rest is history.
Kids love pretend play baking and this activity is all about that.
The Supplies
- Storage container (this is 28 qt Sterilite container from Target)
- Muffin tin
- Various mixing spoons (all mine are from the Dollar Store)
- Measuring cups
- Bowls
There are no fancy supplies needed to make an Oatmeal Baking Station – just some kitchen utensils and some oatmeal.

It’s the easiest set up…
I poured the oatmeal into the storage container (I’m new to oatmeal bins so this bag of oats is only 6 weeks old….I’m sure it will have many more birthdays with me).
I dumped in a bunch of cooking supplies so my son (3) could have a real chef experience.

Great activities don’t need to cost a great amount
The idea of a kids activities is just to quickly, simply, and effectively help your child find play.
We want activities to be the catalyst of play – and oh my goodness, all the play my son did here.
He exercised his voice and language skills narrating the entire bin.
He learned more about capacity and volume.
And he moved into his own independent play using the tools I had set out in the bin. Kids activities like this Oatmeal Baking Station have so much value.

I wasn’t sure if my kids would be as in to an oatmeal bin as they are with their beloved rice bins…but I was blown away.
Having the baking supplies with the oatmeal created a unique experience for my toddler to be all over.
