Ready for a simple alphabet activity? If you’re looking for a low-pressure way to let your child play with letters, this one has been a favorite in our house for years. It’s hands-on, engaging, and easy to set up with materials you likely already have.

Alphabet Magnet Match-up
Alphabet Magnet Match-up is one of those activities that quietly checks a lot of boxes. It supports early literacy, builds visual discrimination skills, and feels like play instead of practice.
Before we get into it, let’s address the elephant in the room.
Yes, this activity uses permanent marker on a cookie sheet.
No, I did not ruin my cookie sheet.
I promise I’ll explain.

Why alphabet magnets are such a great learning tool
Just like playing with trucks, blocks, or animal toys, playing with alphabet magnets gives kids a low-stress way to interact with letters. This is not about forcing children to learn the ABCs or quizzing them until they get it right. This is about letting the alphabet exist as something to explore, touch, and play with.
When kids play with letters the same way they play with other toys, they build familiarity and confidence. That foundation matters far more than memorization.

What you need for Alphabet Magnet Match-up

- Alphabet magnets
- Cookie sheet
- Permanent black marker
- Hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol
- A scrubby sponge
- Construction paper (optional, if you don’t want to write on your cookie sheet)
First, check that your cookie sheet is magnetic. Most are, but not all. This activity is just a tad more fun with a magnetic surface for the letters to stick.
Next, write the alphabet directly onto the cookie sheet using permanent marker. Yes, permanent. I know that feels bold.
Here’s the important part: permanent marker comes off a cookie sheet with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer and a good scrub. Always spot test first. I am just some lady on the internet, and your cookie sheet deserves respect.
NOTE: If you don’t want to write on your cookie sheet, you can write the letters on construction paper instead. Tape this to your cookie sheet. Good enough!

Why this activity works so well
There is a lot of visual discrimination happening here. Visual discrimination is the ability to notice differences and similarities between shapes and symbols. For young children, letters can be especially tricky since many look similar.
Activities like Alphabet Magnet Match-up give kids repeated, playful exposure to letters without pressure. They’re learning to notice details, compare shapes, and make matches in a way that feels natural.
And just to be clear: early familiarity with the alphabet does not mean early reading. This is about building comfort, not accelerating timelines.

Easy ways to change it up
There are so many fun ways to play with this activity, to switch things up and make it fresh.
Sometimes I bury the alphabet magnets in rice.
Sometimes I hide them in Easter eggs.
Sometimes I scatter them around the house for a scavenger hunt-style match.
No matter how it’s set up, Alphabet Magnet Match-up always feels fresh and engaging.
This is a classic for a reason. It’s easy, adaptable, and useful across a wide range of ages and stages. Alphabet Magnet Match-up is one of those activities you can pull out again and again throughout the year.
