Have a kiddo working on their letters? Try this Alphabet Matchup Activity for whole-body fun.

Letters are a fun one to teach kids. It’s easy to track progress, all the growth is readily apparent, and it’s knowledge they’ll need for a lifetime.

Making an alphabet matchup activity is an easy way to move and learn.

Let’s get moving with the alphabet

It’s so easy to see letters and think: flashcards. Worksheets. Printables.

Nope.

That’s not what kids need to learn the alphabet. Kids need moving. Kids need interaction. Kids also need time and to learn letters at their own pace.

If you’re worried about your child and the alphabet, READ THIS. You don’t need to be concerned.

When kids play and learn with the alphabet, things link and connect so much better than if we use a still and rigid flashcard.

Let’s bring moving into the equation. Let’s get kids learning with their whole bodies.

BUT REMEMBER THIS: Kids learn the alphabet at their own pace just like they learned to walk. Don’t compare your child to anyone else’s.

The easy alphabet matchup activity set up

Materials:

• White butcher paper (THE BEST SUPPLY TO OWN)
• Painter’s tape (wall safe)
• Giant sharpie marker
• Regular kid washable marker

I rolled out the white butcher paper on my floor first and did all my prep work there.

Along the top of the paper, I wrote CAPITAL letters all mixed up.

On the bottom, I wrote lower case letter (again) all mixed up.

My daughter (4)’s goal: match the CAPITAL letter to the lower case letter.

Quick note about verbiage:

There are lots of terms for letters: Capital, Big, Upper case, Lower case, small, little…

Use what you use. Don’t over think it. In fact, I kind of use them all and guess what?! My kids get them all because kids are great at understanding context clues and categorizing information.

Just like they know that good, great, awesome, fantastic, and wonderful all mean the same thing…. They get it with letters too.

This was a JOY to watch for me

Truth be told, I wasn’t 100% sure my daughter could do this activity.

BUT I STILL SET IT UP FOR HER BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW.

And it turns out, I didn’t know.

I didn’t know she 100% knows all her capital and lower case letters. It was shocking and amazing to me especially because I don’t work with her on letters.

I’ve allowed this to develop naturally, in context, and over time. Just as she learned color words and animal names without any fuss or drama from me – she’s learned her letters too.

If she HADN’T been able to do this, I would have jumped in to help with clues and an assist. I wouldn’t have made any big deal about it because no one ever learned their letters from a big deal being made ?

You don’t need to stress out about letters.

Making this alphabet matchup activity was great for so many reasons: it kept my daughter busy for 15 minutes, it showed me just how much she knows, and it showed HER just how much she knows.
