You’re going to love this toddler alphabet game!
Isn’t it “imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery”? Well the same goes for toddler activities – sometimes, you just have to take inspiration from a truly great idea.
That’s how this simple toddler alphabet game came to be: I just had to imitate a great idea from one of my favorite blogs, Munchkins and Moms. Her idea for using a laundry basket for toddler fishing was brilliant. Just plain brilliant. I just knew my daughter would go nuts for it.
My toddler loved this activity
Alphabet Fishing will go down as one of those magical activities. Magically simple, magically different, magically perfect for toddlers.
My daughter (26 months old) loved the idea of using a laundry basket as a fishing boat. Who wouldn’t? It’s so much fun!
Some tips for Alphabet Fishing
This simple toddler alphabet game is great, but there are a few tips to making it go smoothly.
- Baskets tip – so make sure to do this on carpet/know your toddler with this activity.
- Show your toddler some strategies for keeping the basket steady. I worked with my daughter for a few seconds and got her to understand the balance of it all.
- Keep the “fish” close to the basket so your toddler doesn’t have to reach far (aka be likely to tip the basket).

This was such an easy set up and an easy one for my daughter to put together on her own (bonus points for that!).
We spread out her magnets in front of the basket and I handed over the magnetic wand. This was a way better option for her than tongs – she can’t quite work them yet.
Ideas for extending Alphabet Fishing
There are so many ways you can extend this activity to make it perfect for your toddler.
- Not ready for letters? Try regular fridge magnets.
- Working on fine motor skills? Try this activity with tongs like Munchkins and Moms did.
- Looking for more challenge? Try matching the fished out letters to ABC post it notes.
We loved this ABC fishing activity – it was such an easy toddler alphabet game and perfect for my 26 month old. Not only did she play it for almost 20 minutes straight, but she went back and restarted the activity on her own throughout the day. Now that’s an activity win!
