Be unexpected and make a corn meal sensory pool for your toddler!
Why yes, that is a kiddie pool filled with corn meal. You read that right people. Corn meal sensory pool is all the rage right now at our house and you need this amazingly easy activity in your life too.
Corn meal (also called corn flour) is such a fun sensory bin for toddlers. It pours and moves much like sand but is very edible. It’s a little smaller than sand too. Perfect for toddlers who are still in the “taste testing” phase.

- Corn meal (I used two boxes aka 48 ounces)
- Kiddie pool
I wanted to create a fun sand box style sensory activity with my 17 month old, but that little lady cannot be trusted yet with sand. She’d just eat it. I needed a sand alternative and practically ran for my boxes of corn meal – I knew corn meal would be perfect for her.
I set the kiddie pool outside to make this a fun summer activity, but it could easily have been done inside – just a lay a towel or two down. I poured in the boxes of cornmeal and added some measuring cups and toy cars. At first she sat on the outside and ran her hands through it, then she practically jumped into the pool to play.
She was in heaven and so was big brother (newly 3 years old) who came running to see what all the fun was about. He got really into this activity too but he’s not so into “mess” so he never got in the pool. They both loved scooping the corn meal, moving it around the pool, filling dump trucks, etc.
The corn meal sensory pool was a bonafide hit. We loved it so much we wanted to save the corn meal for later so we put it into our sand table (it has a lid and was currently sand free). It’s been three days of corn meal sensory in our backyard and I don’t see the fun stopping anytime soon!
If you are looking for a great alternative to sand AND something unexpected to do outside, try making a corn meal sensory pool. You will have one happy toddler which makes for one happy parent and that’s the kind of family we are always going for. Put this on your must try list!
