Outside and messy is the perfect combination for fun with friends.
What better way to play this summer than with the ULTIMATE messy kids activity?
Making this Jello party for 4 two-year-olds was the highlight of the summer – and I want you to have these fun memories too.
There’s nothing fancy going on here – just Jello and a pool and toddlers – but it is so magical and so manageable because my friends were there to help with this messy play date.

What makes this activity totally manageable are the friends I have behind the scenes. There were 4 moms to help with these 4 toddlers which meant – 8 sets of hands to keep this under control.
For most of this event (yes, it’s definitely an event), the toddlers played and we sat outside having morning coffee and trying to remember the last time we’d talked to adults.
When the kids were ready to be done, that’s when team work made things possible.
Here are the jobs my friends and I had during the clean up:
- One friend started hosing off toddlers
- One friend started hosing off the bin and utensils
- One friend started lunch
- One friend kept taking pictures for her website (whoops, that’s me).
The point being: strength in numbers made this activity happen.

Setting up a Jello Party is so easy!
Materials:
- Kiddie pool
- 3 boxes of Jell-O (made and ready)
- Various kitchen utensils and miscellaneous toys
For this activity, we made three batches of Jello for the four toddlers to play with. That actually seemed to be the perfect amount for 4 toddlers to “share”. You will want to make your Jello the night before, let it set, then dump it into your pool the next day.
What did the toddlers do with the Jello?
We made a variety of tools available to the kids: colanders, kitchen utensils, measuring cups, dump trucks.
It’s so important to leave kids some open-ended wiggle room to make choices with their sensory play and one great way to do that is to line up materials and let them decide what to use.
Are they learning during a Jello Party?
You know what, they actually are learning here!
They’re doing:
- Sensory / tactile learning
- Cooperative play
- Cause and effect
- Science (learning about consistencies)
This is a mess, but it’s a mess with purpose.
We will for sure do this again!
I love giving toddler’s chances like this to really get messy and this foursome loved it.
And since it was a backyard activity with my friends, the mess and the mayhem was perfectly fine. Strength in numbers.
Remember: There’s always room for Jello, especially in summertime toddler activities.
