Need the greatest indoor activity of all time? Meet the LEGO bath: a quick and easy way to make it to nap time. Try this idea next time the day isn’t going well – don’t forget to read how to clean up the LEGO bricks (it’s included in the post).
What’s the story behind the LEGO bath?
A LEGO bath was a discovery I made in 2015 and my life has been better ever since that day.
I was having a frustrating afternoon with my then 2 year old. The 9 month old was demanding so much of me, the toddler wanted his share as well and time was ticking backwards. My toddler waking up early from his nap was not what I needed.
I knew we were never going to make it through that purgatory of time between naps and dinner time.
I needed help. I needed a miracle. I needed a Hail Mary play.
So I decided to dump all the LEGO Duplo bricks into the bath tub and hope for the best. My mom always taught me: when in doubt, just add water. A mid-day bath for the win, and why not add Duplos with it?

Here’s why you should try a LEGO bath
This changed everything for my day. And my toddler’s day too. And for the rest of our life following that moment.
The LEGO bath is magical: it’s unexpected (I’ll never forget my son’s expression when I dumped the bin in the water).
It’s a sensory wonderland: the LEGO bricks float, clink, and have a great presence in the water.
It’s something new to play with: bath time can get stale. Putting a normally “dry” toy into the wet tub changes up everything.
The LEGO bath is epic. It checks every box for greatness.

The supplies

- LEGO Duplo Bricks

I only put a supply list down to make sure we are all on the same page that I’m talking about LEGO Duplo bricks not tiny LEGO bricks. Big LEGO bricks – the Duplo kind. The kind that won’t go down the drain.
What happens in a LEGO bath?
Kids build. They play. They engage with the bricks in a different way than they do on “dry land.”
LEGO bricks in water is a completely new experience and opens up a new level of independent play.
Speaking of which: do be ready to spend some quality time in your bathroom supervising this activity. I usually plan on about 45 minutes hanging out in there. Your drawers will never be more organized. Your bathroom will never be cleaner.

How to clean up a LEGO bath
There are always two more commonly asked questions when I talk about a LEGO bath:
- Do the LEGO bricks mold?
- How do get them clean?
First: they don’t mold. I’ve been doing this activity for over 8 years with the same bricks and they’ve never minded or molded even a bit. They’re happy and healthy from all their baths.
Here’s how to get them out: Keep the tub full and grab a colander. Scoop the LEGO Duplo bricks out and lay them on a towel.
Get your kid(s) involved in this process:
Flip every brick over so the water drains out. This is an awesome job for little hands. Leave the Duplo bricks to dry and they’ll be the cleanest toy you now own.
Other Frequently Asked Questions
Think stages not ages. Instead of focusing on a child’s age, consider the stage of life they are in as well as their personality. Would they enjoy a LEGO bath? Do they like building with bricks? My son loved this at age 2. He just took a LEGO bath last week at age 10.
Megabloks are a great other option, but I do NOT recommend magnetic tiles. The water can get inside. You could also try a pom pom bath or a Popsicle bath instead.
Duplos are great for 18 months and up. My kids loved them as toddlers and still use them as big kids.
