The most genius airport activity ever: wearable airplane travel snacks for kids.
Traveling with kids is tough. There’s a lot of waiting, some more waiting, a sprinkle of waiting – oh and stay in your seat for a few hours. It’s NOT EASY on them. So I had my kids make airplane travel snacks and it might just be the best idea I’ve ever had.

These airplane travel snacks will blow your mind.
Remember making a Froot Loop necklace as a kid?
You know you did and you know you loved it. It is a rite of kid passage and also amazing to wear and eat. It literally checks every box.
So I had my kids make these same necklaces IN THE AIRPORT before our last vacation.
And it literally saved the day.
Of course, our plane was delayed. This is the Murphy’s Law Expectation of Traveling with Children. Lines will be longer. Planes will be later. It’s basically science.
Good thing I came prepared.
(Literally was the human embodiment of the dancing lady emoji)

Here’s how I set this up (YOU NEED THESE TIPS)
I will preface these tips with: I was a kindergarten and first grade teacher. This is not the first time I’ve ever made a cereal necklace with a group of little kids.
This is basically second nature to me. I got tips.
TIP 1: I cut the string before we left and attached TAPE to the end to make a “needle”.
TIP 2: On the other end, I knotted a piece of cereal as the base to keep all other cereals from falling off. Nothing is more tragic than a spilled necklace.
TIP 3: For my kids, I made each one their own bag of cereal so no one had to share. Sharing is great and it’s awesome to ask of our kids. In an airport after a long morning of waiting – I’m good with leaving the sharing train behind.
WHAT ABOUT THE NASTY AIRPORT SEATS?!
Yeah, those things are probably not clean.
Definitely wipe them down if you can.
Also, before we made these necklaces, my children had CRAWLED in the security line, ROLLED down the terminal carpet, and I saw one of them LICK a seat.
So in theory, yes, wipe the seats down.
But with the right perspective, you remember that kids do a lot worse than some cereal brushing the edge of an airport seat.
This airplane travel snacks saved our day – not exaggerating
After waking early for the trip and a ridiculously long security line, the kids were toast. Once we found out the plane was delayed, I knew – it was necklace time.
I set each kid up on their own (disgusting) chair and gave directions / showed exactly how to do this.

My toddler worked for TWENTY MINUTES.
He never works at ANYTHING for 20 minutes.
My 6-year-old lasted just over 30 minutes.
My 4-year-old – she was fixated on filling up the ENTIRE necklace and 45 mins later…she had done just that. It was AMAZING.
Make sure to tie them just right….
TIP 4: Make sure you tie the necklace so it’s large enough to go over the child’s head.
They can wear this onto the plane and BOOM – instant snack at the ready and they don’t need to ask for any help.
Some FAQs about these:
- Did they make a big mess? NOPE. Somehow this was just fine or rather “in the normal limits of kid snack mess”.
- What if my child is too young to thread? Do it for them. This still makes a great snack ON the plane for older babies and young toddlers.
- Do Cheerios work? YES! You betcha!!
- Is the string reusable? Not really but if you’re looking for a reusable option – buy a new shoe lace. The end is already wrapped like a “needle” and you can wash the lace when you get home. Just make sure to save it in your suit case for next trip.
- Would this work in the car? YOU BETCHA!
- Will TSA let the cereal through? It’s not a liquid and isn’t on any no-fly lists so as far as I know – you should be just fine.
Who knew a snack could change your life?
But that’s exactly what these necklaces did for us – well, maybe not our lives, but definitely rescued and saved the first day of our vacation.
Now go – PREP THIS IMMEDIATELY for your next trip!
