Welcome to oobleck, friends
Oobleck is the most amazing, incredible substance and you can make it with just TWO ingredients. And I bet you already have them.
Oobleck is a non-Newtonian substance that’s made by mixing cornstarch and water. It’s kind of a solid. Kind of a liquid. And all the way awesome.
Just cornstarch and water for a whole lot of fun.
(well, and an optional few drops of food coloring if you’d like it to be fancy and rainbow-esque)

Kids LOVE making oobleck
Kids never get to old for oobleck – kids and 37 year old mom’s who blog about kids activities (wink). I told you I love a good oobleck moment.
From ages 12 months old to 12 years old, oobleck is a crowd pleaser.
And since it’s taste safe, even our tabies can play too!
Here’s how to make it:
2 parts cornstarch
+ 1 part water
+ optional food coloring
Mix, mix, mix and oh my goodness: you’ve got oobleck.
For this activity in the photos, I made FOUR colors of oobleck. Each color was made as follows:
1 cup of cornstarch + ½ cup of water + 4-5 drops of food coloring.
The food coloring doesn’t stain from this (in my experience) because it’s so diluted.
Mix it up and toss it out back – it’s time for outdoor oobleck
This bin was so easy to make. I made the four colors (usually I only do ONE color of oobleck but I was feeling especially ambitious this day).
I poured the oobleck colors into my beloved 28 qt storage container for my kids to play with.
I added in some mini trucks and cooking utensils for the kids to play with. The ice cream scoops paired with the trucks were far and away the favorites.
Outdoor oobleck for the absolute win!
Between making the oobleck with my toddler (3) and playing with it – this was a solid hour of our life spent with outdoor oobleck.
Now that’s a fantastic return of play investment: so much play for so little parent work.

FAQ on Oobleck:
- Ooobleck is NOT like slime: It isn’t sticky, it doesn’t stain, and it’s not going to get stuck in your child’s hair, clothing, or your carpet. Even if it did, flood it with water and it’ll dilute the cornstarch from a thick goo to regular water.
- Oobleck is TASTE SAFE: Because it’s made with cornstarch and water, it’s a taste safe option.
- How do you clean it? Hose out the bin! Once you dilute the oobleck and add in more water, the thick properties change and it’s 100% liquid.
- Will it stain? It shouldn’t – but I’m just a lady on the internet. Do your research but do know that food coloring is water based and will dissolve out of fabrics and wash out of hands.
