Creating a simple recycled road for loads of fun and play.
Sometimes, it’s not the craftiest, or prettiest, or most in-depth toddler activity that’s an absolute winner. Making a recycled road with your toddler is a super easy indoor activity that you’ve got to try.
Activities like Recycled Road are my absolute favorites. Quick, easy, fun and free. Now that’s a toddler activity I can get behind.

- Cardboard box
- Electrical tape
- Toddler imagination
The set up couldn’t have been easier: we (I) carefully unfolded one of the roughly 7,923 Amazon boxes living in our garage. As much as my toddler wanted to be the one to slice the box open with scissors…. this is a job for Mom.
Once the box was opened in front of us, I let my toddler guide the project. I asked him where the roads should be, what kind of roads, etc. He knew exactly how he wanted his town laid out.
A few pieces of electrical tape and some sharpie really made this activity come to life. And who would have thought? It’s just a box. It’s just tape. But to him, it was his city. It was Sam-ville.
Once the road was made, we started gathering up the cars. Sam went crazy for this! His imagination went wild and I sat back in absolute awe of him. He was in his own little Sam-ville world!
In another craftier life, we could have added stop signs, plants, and maybe even some giant boulders (aka rocks) to the city. But Sam was so happy with how things looked once the road was done that I wasn’t about to stop him so we could get craftier.
We will definitely remember this project on vacation – wouldn’t this be an easy one to throw together at grandma’s house?
This recycled road has been an absolute hit at our house. It folds up flat so it lives under the couch when it’s not being used. All the toddler friends who have visited lately have loved this recycled road. Something about it just grabs them.

This is so cute! And what a great way to make a road and keep it! We’ve done tape on the floor, but we always have to take it off. I like this because you can easily store it and play with it over and over again!!
