Need some sensory fun? Try a little dinosaur archaeology!
I am a sucker for all activities with tiny dinosaurs. It’s no secret that I love dinosaur activities – there’s just something fun about pulling a stegosaurus out of Jello or making a small dinosaur world to play with. For this round of dinosaur play, I hid our beloved friends in cloud dough (aka the most fun sensory material around!).
Making cloud dough is simple, easy and a fast way to get your toddler playing until nap time. There’s something magical, intriguing and curious about this sensory material. Add in tiny dinosaurs with it and you’ve got a winner.
Making cloud dough for dinosaur archaeology is quick and easy!

- Flour
- Vegetable oil
- Tiny dinosaurs (I have no idea where mine are from but these are so cute!)
- Paint brushes
Cloud dough is so simple to make. It’s a 8:1 ratio of flour to oil. For this batch of cloud dough, I used 4 cups of flour and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Mixed it all up in a bowl and it was ready for playing! It’s that simple. Cloud dough is so cool – it’s moldable like wet sand but not sloppy. It’s like fluffy play dough. You definitely need to make this stuff. Plus, if you seal it tight at the end, it will last for months of play.
My goal for this activity was to have my toddler work to uncover the dinosaurs in the bin using a paint brush. He loved it and it worked great! I can imagine doing this activity with letters. shapes, even some other tiny animals we have. Anything the can be hidden and found would be perfect to put into cloud dough.
It didn’t take my toddler long before he’d uncovered all the dinosaurs. Then he hid them again, smooshed around the cloud dough, and had an amazingly fun cloud dough time. The best part of cloud dough is how long it holds attention. Have I made it clear enough yet how awesome cloud dough is? Seriously, make it today. Do it.
Dino archaeology with cloud dough was a smash hit at our house. And cloud dough is taste safe so it’s perfect for my baby to play with too. See, cloud dough is so awesome it’s even a hit with the baby crowd too! There are so many ways you can play with cloud dough and dino archaeology is just one of them.

Cute idea, but it is Dinosaur Paleontology. Archaeology is the study of HUMAN civilizations and their artifacts. If you put in pottery, arrow heads, coins, etc, it would be then be archaeology. They are VERY different branches of scientific study, so don’t confuse the kiddos!

Is this ratio correct? I made it this afternoon and it was just dough! Then I looked up the recipe elsewhere and other recipes say it’s an 8:1 ratio…

Oh my goodness, Kelly! I can’t believe I typed it in wrong. I’ve amended the recipe in this post and am forever sorry this happened / grateful that you caught it and let me know!
