Water Transfer Play Station

How a simple water transfer station makes for one happy toddler.

Fine motor skills + water = concentrating toddler = happy mom.

Now that is some solid math, people. What’s holding my toddler’s attention this time? A water transfer station, of course. And it was oodles of fun.

I REALLY needed an easy activity one morning to keep my boy, Sam, occupied while I got a little work done around the house. We went with a water transfer station and it was perfect for us.

Setting up a water transfer station is quick and easy.

Materials:

• under the bed storage tub
• some small cups
• some water in a large bowl
• some tools to transfer the water

I set up a bowl of water with four smaller empty cups adjacent to it. I laid out a syringe, turkey baster, and tablespoon measures as our tools of choice. The turkey baster and syringe were great in theory but actually ended up giving my toddler (29 months) a pretty good run for his money.

He’s 29 months old here and try as he might, he just couldn’t quite grasp the “use two hands” concept needed for those tools. Bless his heart for trying as hard as he did. An older toddler could definitely use those great items for this activity. Younger toddlers: better just stick with scoops and cups.

What he really enjoyed was transferring the water using his spoons and an old pumpkin scoop I had lying around.

And I know what you’re thinking….how long did this last?

Our water transfer station lasted a solid 10 minutes before he turned it into a water pouring station. Fine with me because water pouring bought me another 5 minutes.

AND my baby, 9 months, had fun splashing in the water once she woke up from nap land and I got a fun little glimpse at a future with the two of them playing together (swoon).
