Have some process art fun with Squirt Paint!
My favorite part about the summer (aside from rocket pops, duh) is outdoor art projects. The warm weather makes for the perfect backdrop for some large scale, messy, and insanely fun art activities for our toddler/preschool crowd.
Process art is a fancy way of saying “art with no predetermined outcome”. Think – the difference between a piece of paper and a bunch of markers vs. coloring a picture in a coloring book.
Setting up Squirt Paint was so easy!

- Washable tempera paint (this is my favorite kind)
- Squirt bottles
- Butcher paper / Kraft paper
- Water
For this splatter paint style activity, I watered down our tempera paint to make sure it would spray easily out of the squirt bottles. I used a 1:1 ratio of water and paint, but really – just go by feel. You’ll “know” when it’s watered down enough for your bottles and your project.
We did this as a play date activity with some of Sam’s toddler best friends – three barely 3 year olds having a painting time together. It was a hoot. We rolled out the butcher paper, showed them how the paint squirts out of the bottles, and stepped back.
What a giggle fest! The kids were in their messy element making this into a beautiful piece of art. They got pretty paint covered themselves – good thing it was washable paint and warm out.
The kids and the deck both got hosed off at the end. This unpainted, unstained deck did just fine with the washable paint splatter. We hosed it off ASAP and the paint came right up.
We had the kids play in the kiddie pool to clean up their little bodies while we got the paint mess put away. It all worked out so perfectly!
There is nothing better than a couple of toddlers making messy art memories together. I loved this squirt paint activity and all the fun these toddlers got to have together. Squirt paint was the perfect activity for our crowd.

This looks so fun! And it would be fun to make a big picture for the playroom, too!
