Make your own DIY Chalk Paint for awesome outdoor fun!
This morning, my toddler was begging to paint outside and let me know he planned to paint the house, fence and my yellow “sip coffee and sit” summer chair. As much as I love washable tempera paint, I knew chalk paint was the better way to go for what he was aiming to do so I whipped up this easy DIY chalk paint in under 5 minutes.
Painting outside is one of our favorite ways to paint (and should be one of my 6 tips for painting with toddlers). There is so much less to worry about and so much fun to be had. We love painting with cars outside, painting with pudding, and now, painting with our newly made DIY chalk paint.
Wait until you see how easy DIY chalk paint is to make!

Seriously, this chalk paint could not have been easier to make! I quickly grated about 1 inch of chalk off each large stick and added 1 Tablespoon of water to the now powder chalk. The large sticks were easier to grate than the small thin ones, in my opinion, so I stuck with those. I only grated up four colors for my son and he was perfectly happy with that.
The paint turned out beautiful! My son was able to do exactly as he planned: paint the house, fence and chair without me having any sort of heart palpitations over things coming clean. It’s chalk. It’ll wash off with the hose or during the next rainy day.
I was happy to see him get a chance to paint standing because this is so good for his hand strength and arm strength. Painting while holding the brush up and out takes a whole different set of muscles than painting sitting at a table. It’s great to vary position while painting.
Even though it didn’t feel like we made much paint, we have plenty left over. I’m so glad I made our DIY chalk paint in plastic containers. I just popped the lids on and have them stored for our next outdoor painting adventure.
