Pom Pom Water Play!! Can Pom poms get wet?! You bet they can.
LISTEN TO THIS: Pom poms can get soaking wet, be cleaned, dried, and come out JUST FINE ON THE OTHER SIDE. Kind of makes you want to try this pom pom water play activity ASAP?!
Credit where credit is due: I learned about pom poms and water from my dear friends at The Paige Diaries and Happy Toddler Play Time.
Ok so wait: Pom poms can live again AFTER water?
You read that right!
Pom poms can come back to life after water play and LET ME TELL YOU: a pom pom in water is about the coolest sensory texture there is.
So much feels so right about a pom pom ball in water. It’s a not-to-be-missed sensory activity.

CAUTION: Remember that pom poms are a choking hazard and definitely not taste safe. Use good judgement and supervision when your child is with pom pom balls.
It’s about the easiest bin to set up!

- 28 qt sensory bin
- Water
- Miscellaneous bowls and scoops
- POM POM BALLS (the star of this show)
I started by setting my sensory bin outside and dumping in all my pom pom balls.
I added in some bowls and scoops and topped it all off with hose water. Nothing but the finest around here.

The KIDS LOVE Pom Pom Water Play!
I started this as an activity for my 2.5-year-old but really it turned into an all-day activity for all of the kids – neighbor kids up to age 10 included.
No one can resist a pom pom ball and water. Too much squeezing and smooshing needs to happen.
RELATED: We did this activity once INSIDE and here’s how it looked!
Here’s how to clean up the pom pom balls:
Start by transferring all the pom pom balls to a pillow case WITH A COLANDER.
This lets extra water drain out. I even pressed down on the poms in the colander to get even more water out of those little soaked up guys.
Once all the pom poms are in the pillow case, tie that in a knot (and give the whole thing one more ringing-out squeeze).
Put it in the washing machine on gentle and then into the dryer on regular heat.
VOILA!!! The pom poms are like new again!
I always do Pom pom water play when I know my pom pom balls have gotten a little gnarly. This gives me the excuse to wash them and clean things up a bit around here.
Don’t be afraid of pom poms and water!
They were actually made for each other – but somehow not many people know that. So spread the word! This little supply is water friendly, cleanable, and totally reusable.
What an awesome way to spend a day playing!
