There’s something calming about the mornings at my house. Maybe it’s the fresh start (no one is in time out yet) or the restful happy kids (no one needs a nap just yet). Whatever it is, the early morning is a pretty good time around here.
And I like to “make hay while the sun shines” so that means I pack our mornings with as much play and learning as possible – you know, before someone ends up in time out or needs a nap (wink).

I like to do this morning calendar routine each day and I want to share it with you.
Let’s call it a throwback Thursday type moment, except instead of a memory, it’s my former life as a teacher. Even back then, I loved mornings best with my first graders and the freshness of the day.
I had a great morning calendar routine. It was a highlight. It was fancy (I used a SMART board), it was interactive, it was fun for the kids.

The problem with being a stay-at-home Mom is that I don’t exactly have a SMART board just lying around my house. Maybe you do and my house just isn’t that cool.
I wanted a way to bring my morning calendar routine into my house because there is so much value to this routine so I adapted it to be at-home perfect.
Do you know how much learning there is by doing calendar?
Doing a morning calendar routine is so much more than just talking about what day it is.
In a calendar routine, kids are learning:
- Sequence: the order of the days and months
- Vocabulary: weather words, date words
- Ordinal numbers: first, second, third
- Number sense: counting on by one each day
- Number recognition: recognizing numbers 1 – 31.
Plus there’s simply value in routine!
It’s no secret that kids thrive on routine. They like predictability. Having this calendar routine has given another layer of predictability to my kids.
But when do you start a calendar routine?
I started doing calendar with my son at age 2.5 when he received his calendar for Christmas.
Here’s an Amazon affiliate link to the calendar we have. I keep it up high so my kids can reach it with assistance but can’t tear it all apart.
When we first got it, it was something to do and it was fun on top of it. My son learned the songs fairly quickly.
Now at 3.5, he’s a pro and can nearly work the entire routine by himself. He’s starting to get the order of things and recognizing day and month words when he hears them in conversation. How cool is that? See if you can figure out his birth month when you watch our video – he emphasizes it a little (insert laughing emoji).
My daughter gets the second kid bonus – she’s seen us do this most of her life. By the time she was 20 months old, she was an active participant in calendar time (she’s 25 months old now and fully engaged).

My kids and I made a video of our routine, since I’m a convicted visual learner and would need to see something like this in order to replicate it.
I hope you’ll consider starting your day with a calendar routine – it’s really a great way to add a little learning and a lot of fun into a toddler’s morning, which you know is my favorite part of a toddler day.
