I had just about given up on drinking my coffee for the morning. It wasn’t going to happen. There was no way I was ever going to have even 30 seconds to sit my delicious French roast.

Until I grabbed out our Alphabet Dominoes.

And then life and my morning took a giant shift into Hot Coffee Peaceful Land. I’ll explain…

How alphabet dominoes saved my morning

It was one of those days with my 4 year old. He was at an 11 on the “needs constant mom attention” and not that I’m trying to compare kids – but the toddler was being more independent than him. You know what that says…

I looked around for anything.

Something.

ANYTHING to grab his attention, hold it, and give me a minute to breathe.

That’s when I saw the craft sticks.

I gabbed the craft sticks and in 2 minutes I had a DIY activity that my preschooler went nuts for.

Ok so the last supply is optional but I’m just being real. That’s what I had to work with.

The trick to making alphabet dominoes

There’s one little trick to making these and making them successful. You need to build them as a chain.

Meaning – you can’t just willy nilly write letters and matching letters and hope this works. You need to be strategic and make the domino chain as your building it to make sure this works.

I made capital letters match with lower case letters. This was perfect for my four year old.

How to explain the activity

I took the alphabet dominoes and showed them to my son. I explained that each letter had a matching letter. So far so good.

Then we talked about how it was going to make a big chain and that he got to decide the shape of the chain.

He’s totally on board and digging this.

And I sat back with my coffee to watch.

I parked it on the couch, giving some assistance as needed but mostly just drinking my coffee and enjoying the view of my preschooler finally playing quietly and independently.

These alphabet dominoes were perfect for them. I even left them out!

I kept them sitting in the toy box area for a few days and he’d keep going back to them just like any toy or puzzle. He loved the challenge of making the big chain and getting the sticks to line up.

Alphabet dominoes saved my coffee. They may not be superheros but they definitely rescued my coffee from going down the sink and for that, I’ll forever be grateful.
