Giant Shape Match Activity

Looking for a simple math activity? Try this Giant Shape Match.

Since quick and easy activities are literally my favorite activities, I love when I can add an element of learning into the mix.

Homemade puzzles are a great way to reuse toys and have a little fun at the same time. This Giant Shape Match was a learning hit at our house and a fun large scale version of our shape match activity.

Setting up this Giant Shape Match is so simple!

Materials:

• Blocks – we used a few from this wooden set and others from these two toys (this one and this one)
• Kraft Paper
• Black marker

I rolled out a large section of Kraft paper and taped it to the floor. Next, I grabbed an assortment of blocks from a few different toys sets.

Picking the right blocks for Giant Shape Match

I didn’t just grab a bunch of blocks and start tracing. I made sure to grab blocks with a variety of “2-dimensional faces”.

I laid the shapes down on the Kraft paper and started tracing them. It’s best to trace with a pencil and then go back over it with a black marker (unless you’re ok with black marker lines on your blocks – wink).

Once I finished, I opened up the activity to my kids – ages 3.5 years old and 24 months old – and they went bananas for it.

How my children did with this Giant Shape Match activity

My daughter (24 months) did a great job with the colored blocks – especially with matching the more obvious shapes like the flower or the star.

My son (3.5 years old) had a blast trying to match the wooden blocks to their outline. This was tough! Many have similar rectangle faces and that adds such a challenge.

• Spatial awareness – being able to rotate the shapes to make them line up

Save this activity for later!

We used this activity again and again for about a week. I saved the blocks I used for the activity in a basket and unrolled the Kraft paper every day.

When we were “finished” with the activity and had played it into the ground, we colored the shapes in – a fun bonus activity!

Making this Giant Shape Match was a perfect simple math activity for my kids. I loved that they could play it together and all that they learned while doing it.
