Grab a peri bottle – it’s a color mixing activity.

Why yes, that is a peri bottle in my toddler’s hand. Laugh all you want but the peri bottle is ACTUALLY one of the best activity supplies – and this color mixing activity proves it.

The point of this activity is NOT the peri bottle…

It’s the color mixing. This is a color mixing activity and it is simple, fun, and effective. In this activity, my toddler is getting a chance to explore color mixing – a magical part of childhood.

Is there anything more satisfying than mixing up a good color? Even I (at 37) love mixing colors to see what hues and shades and variations I can make up.

So think about that same activity through the eyes of a 3 year old.

Mixing colors is basically magic.

• Peri bottles (don’t have any? Grab some here!)
• Food coloring
• Large storage container – this is a 41 qt bin from Target
• All the clear plastic containers
• Ice cube tray

I didn’t want some massive activity.

I didn’t want a big mess.

I just wanted to give my toddler (3) a few moments to mix colors, concentrate, play by himself, and experiment. This is play – but it is some high level thinking, learning, and doing.

I did give my toddler one suggestions

As we started this activity and looked over the primary colored bottles (red, blue, yellow), I made one suggestion: Only mix two colors at a time…for now.

He mostly listened to that suggestion but since it was just that – a suggestion – I didn’t enforce this as a rule.

It was his activity to learn through and I didn’t want to step in the way of that.

My son does activities like this all the time, but this one – maybe it was the peri bottle – it was special. I haven’t seen him play this long alone in a long time… maybe ever (wink).

His color mixing in the ice cube tray was my favorite- I can’t believe he made that beautiful rainbow. I took a picture so I could remember it!

So what all is he learning by doing a color mixing activity?

This activity is so much more than just mixing colored water. This is serious and significant learning for toddlers and I am here for it.

This is a good one. It’s a classic for a reason. Adding the peri bottle made it perfect for my toddler, and gave me a good chuckle too.
