Dust off those train tracks!
There’s nothing better than being inspired by a good book.
Wait. There is.
Seeing your kids inspired by a really good book is even better.
And that’s what happened to my whole family after reading (affiliate link) Old Tracks, New Tricks. It wasn’t five seconds after finishing that book that our giant bin of train track pieces was brought downstairs for some truly inspired playtime.
These train tracks came to life!

Old Tracks, New Tricks chronicles the adventures of wooden train tracks, the ways they play, and the amazing/inspiring set ups will have your kids all in a buzz.
There’s even a whole section of the book on “Train-tivities!”
My kids were so inspired … wait, not were. ARE. My kids are still inspired by this book and it’s been weeks since we first read it! This book took our wooden train tracks from everyday tracks to something new, different, and special – without buying or adding a thing.
Check out our train tracks activity!
Not only did my kids get inspired by Old Tracks, New Tricks but so did Mom and Dad. We couldn’t help ourselves! We wanted to teach these tracks some new tricks too with our own train tracks activity.
My son went crazy for the “train jump” idea in the book and I was with him – it was such a cool set up!
But I knew we needed some targets and I knew just what to grab!
I can’t be the only skee ball fan!
I grabbed my kids’ stacking buckets and made them into a good old fashioned skee ball game – train tracks edition.
We worked as a family to build the train track ramp and set up the skee ball ramp, then zoomed those little trains off. This train tracks activity was awesome!
Can’t you just here the “weeeeee!” of excitement from the little trains as they fly off the ramp?
Or the “weeeee!” of excitement from the kids sending those trains flying?
We loved adjusting, guessing, moving the ramp to hit the different skee ball bucket targets. It was awesome to work together as a family on this activity.
It’s not often that a book can inspire an entire family, or flip the table on a timeless toy. Somehow, Old Tracks, New Tricks manages to do just that!
