“Moving Math” is my favorite kind of math

Often we forget that childhood is about moving. It’s about the whole body learning not just the brain. So while this activity might be focused on math and mental understanding of numbers, we can take that learning to a new and deeper level by adding movement.

When a child moves and does and explores and engages, they are learning in a way far more meaningful than sitting at a desk with a worksheet doing a similar activity.

It’s just the way kids learn.

They need to play to learn.

They need to play to grow.

They need to play to retain.

This is THE WAY to practice number sense

Numbers are so much more than “memorized” counting.

Being able to count is one thing. Understanding what those numbers mean is a whole other thing.

That’s what my daughter is practicing here: what does a numeral actually mean?

Here’s the simple set-up for Post-It Number Match

Materials:

• Post-it Notes
• Sharpie Marker
• Painter’s Tape
• White butcher paper – I couldn’t live without this!

I started by rolling out the sheet of white paper and putting “dot quantities” all over it.

Then, I grabbed my Post-Its and wrote the numeral for each “dot quantity”.

And now the fun starts….

I took the Post-Its and hid them ALL OVER my living room. I mean EVERYWHERE.

The goal: find the Post-It numeral and match it to the dots.

My daughter (3.5) raced HIGH AND LOW to find those numbers, running back to the white paper and counting away.

Sometimes, she knew the dot quantity and the numeral immediately.

Other times, she used “guess and check” to determine if the numeral and the dots matched.

“What if my child isn’t ready for this?”

There are SO MANY variations for this activity:

• Matching shapes
• Matching numeral to numeral
• Matching letters
• Matching math facts
• Matching colors

This is a VERY OPEN-ENDED activity meaning you can tweak it and twist it to fit your family and child (or children).

Math doesn’t mean sitting still
