Question: Why are googly eyes the funniest craft supply on Earth?
Find me a funnier craft supply because I am sorry but there just isn’t anything hilarious about a glue stick or a paint brush or tissue paper. Now a googly eye? INSTANT humor. Everything is funnier with a googly eye. Art work, toddler activities, even babies…
Sorry Baby Kate. I had to.
This activity was a snap to set up and (funny and fun as it was) it actually had some great skills built into it – namely of the fine motor variety and problem solving.
Here’s the set up and the materials:
(this list contains affiliate links)
- Googly eyes
- Muffin tin
- Clothes pin
- Double sided tape
I put a googly eye in each slot of my mini muffin tin – Sam’s goal being to transfer the eyes from tin to adjacent bowl.
The twist (it can’t be THAT simple – insert muah-hahahaha type laugh here). To up the ante just a little bit, I took a clothes pin and wrapped it in double sided tape to turn it into a make shift sticky grabber. Worked like a charm, I am a genius, I’ll take any and all applauds.
This wasn’t as straight forward and simple as it might appear. The presence of the tape gave Sam some pause: he had to figure out how to them get the eye off the clothes pin and into the bowl. His initial thought was to shake it off (and obviously sing Taylor Swift during the process) but that didn’t work and for the first 7 or 8 eyes, he was constantly having to remind himself to pull them off – then it became second nature. Always fun to see a toddler problem solve and watch that frustration level begin to climb (let’s just go for a two-fer and insert muah-hahahaha type laugh here too).
It was a wiggly, jiggly, fun little activity and it was actually Sam’s first exposure to googly eyes – I think they’re going to have a long, happy friendship.
