Create a DIY giant painting project for your kiddo – they’ll love it!
I love when a project develops organically. My toddler (2.5) and I were sitting together on the floor painting – having some good ol’ one on one time – when I realized he was having the best time filling in whatever I drew. Light bulb! And that’s how giant painting was born!
Making this giant painting project for my son was a great activity to start our day and gave him a fabulous creative outlet for the morning. And it helped get us to nap time…which is a win every day of the week for us.
Making your own giant painting project is so easy.
Materials:

- Kraft paper (I know this stuff isn’t cheap cheap, but man has it been worth it for us!)
- Washable tempera paint
- Brushes
- A fabulous toddler
I loved setting this project up with my son. We rolled out a big canvas of Kraft paper. I grabbed a black marker and he told me what he wanted to color. I’m NO ARTIST (clearly….) but I did my best to give him simple outlines. You might not be able to tell, but there’s an ant, owl, zebra, snake, giraffe and even a house on our paper. Oh I really need to take a lesson from Bob Ross…
Once I finished drawing the animals and objects he requested, it was his turn to take over. And away he went! He was so diligent painting on his massive canvas. I gotta say: I just loved sitting and watching him work through this.
For older children, having them draw their own outlines would be a great extension. For younger painters, consider a good finger paint as an option for this kind of activity.
He worked his way through the painting, making decisions on color and where to go next. I stood back for this entire project and just let him work independently. I was shocked when I realized I’d cleaned the entire kitchen and then some and he was still at it! All told, this held his attention for 32 minutes (not that I was counting or anything…)
The color mixing – which we talked about – and the subtle work with pencil grip were huge added bonuses to this project. Seeing my son so creatively work through his master piece was the real winner.
This giant painting project was one of our most favorite art projects so far. We absolutely loved our giant painting and can’t wait to do it again.

I’m looking for fun activities for my 13 month old twin Granddaughters. I watch them 3 days a week and as often as I can manage after that. Love teaching them new things.
