Easter Egg Color Sorting is a fun Spring-themed math activity.
We are loving Easter activities right now and having a ball playing with plastic eggs. This Easter Egg Color Sorting activity has been our favorites so far and we are playing it on repeat! It’s a perfect combination of math and fine motor skills, and just right for my toddler.
Sorting is a hugely important math skill and one that toddlers can grasp early in life. When a child is sorting, they are classifying information, making decisions about data, and organizing objects. It may seem simple, but sorting is a big deal! Fine motor skills (those small movement we make with our hands) are important too. Cracking these eggs open takes a lot of hand strength which is perfect for our growing little ones.
It is so easy to set up an Easter Egg Color Sorting activity.

To set this up, I did need to take a minute of “Mom prep” to put it together. I put a pom pom ball inside each egg and closed them up. I made sure to use six different colors since I was using a muffin tin of six. You can choose however many colors is right for your toddler. Six seemed perfect for us. I did set one pom pom ball in each section of the muffin tin to get the sorting ball rolling.
And let the sorting fun begin! This was one of the most fun sorting activities we have ever done. The anticipation of what color would be in each egg had my toddler in hysterics. He could hardly wait to open each egg. “What is it?!!!!” He’d yell with so much happiness. It was practically busting with excitement for each egg he opened.
Opening each egg was a great exercise in fine motor skills and so was pouring the pom poms into the tin (which is how my toddler decided to do things). Watching his math skills grow and grow as he sorted the pom poms by color was awesome.
My husband was laughing watching this game because it really could extend into high school. I know – how could that be? It’s all about probability. How likely is it that we will find a pom pom ball next? Not many toddler activities have that much reach!
There are so many possible extensions for this activity. You could fill the eggs with animals to sort, letters, even candy if you’re feeling really brave. If your little isn’t quite ready to sort yet, the anticipation of just opening the eggs was plenty fun for my toddler! This was one of those magical activities that we are obsessed with playing.
You’ve got to try Easter Egg Color Sorting with your toddler. You’ll love how simple it is, but so fun and full of lots of learning.

So fun! I know my son would love this! We are trying to start teaching our daughter colors, too, so this would be a fun one for both of them!
