Have some messy fun with this gak toys activity!
A messy toddler is a happy toddler – and this gak toys activity is a great way to have some silly fun before nap time! Making a mess with gak is a fun way to play.
I know messy activities can be scary, but they don’t have to be (check out my tips for messy play).
Setting up Gak Toys is so easy!

- Plastic container
- Favorite plastic toys (of course, we picked our Paw Patrollers for this activity)
Start by making up some gak
Gak (also called oobleck) is a silly substance that’s not quite liquid and not quite solid. It’s moves but can break. It’s wild to play with.
Here’s how to make it:
- Mix 1 cup cornstarch with 1/2 cup water.
- Optional: if you want colored gak, add food coloring to the water before mixing
- Stir to combine
Gak is a 2:1 cornstarch to water ratio. I used 1 cup cornstarch to make the amount used in this activity.
Getting the activity ready for playtime
I put the gak in a plastic container inside a larger plastic container. This helped to keep the mess really contained.
I added in my daughter’s (24 months) beloved Paw Patrol characters for her to play with in our mess.
I also put a few spoons and scoops in too to help her decorate her toys.
How messy was this activity?
Not messy at all! My daughter has come a long way in her ability to keep sensory bins tidy (thanks to the tips in this post). She kept all the toys in the larger bin and most of the gak in there too.
What did fall out or what was on her hands came off quickly and easily with a wet washcloth. After all, it’s just cornstarch and water!
My daughter loved this activity – getting her toys messy was a really fun “hook” into this sensory bin.
When we were done, everything wiped clean and the toys headed for the dishwasher. Everything was cleaned and back to normal in less than 2 minutes. Now that’s a fast clean up.
Gak toys was a great silly activity on a boring morning for us. Just the right amount of fun with our toys!
