I love this activity so much for my toddlers and they loved it to! The inspiration for ABC rice came from this great baby play activity over at Simple Fun for Kids. With a few modifications for toddlers, this activity has been a hit at our house!

Setting up ABC Rice is so easy!
Materials:
(this list contains affiliate links)
- Rice (mine is colored from this activity)
- Alphabet cookie cutters
- Scoop
I put my colored rice in a small plastic container and set that container in my trusty under the bed storage tub. I threw in a bunch of alphabet cookie cutters into the storage tub and a small scoop into the rice container.
My three year old was immediately captivated by this activity and the goal: carefully fill the letters with rice.
This wasn’t as easy as it looks! It took a lot of toddler care and precision to fill the letter, not just dump rice all over the bin.
My son loved the challenge of filling each letter with rice.
My daughter – 22 months old – tried to play as well but for her the activity was more of a scoop and dump playtime than the precision pouring lesson that it was for my son.
Either way, they both had fun!
There’s so much learning happening in this activity!
ABC Rice packs quite a learning punch. In this activity, my son is working on:
- letter identification
- fine motor skills
- hand-eye coordination
- pouring
- sensory learning
This activity has so much to offer!
Other ideas for ABC Rice
