- Clothes pins
- Paper plate
There isn’t much to setting up this activity. I took a paper plate, cut it in half, and added dots around each one. The goal was simple: put the clothes pin right on the dot.
I love easy activities like this. This took less than 1 minute to set up and my son (3) loves it. He plays it over and over – this has been going on for more than a week now and it isn’t getting old to him.
I set my activity supplies in a tray to make this an “invitation to play” type activity. Something about the added fancy factor of the tray makes it even more special and invites the child in to the activity.
How could you increase the challenge in this clothes pin activity?
- Add alphabet letters to the clothes pin and letters to the plate for a literacy matching game
- Use colored markers for a color matching activity
- Match numbers to dot amounts on the paper plates
What are toddlers working on here?
This simple fine motor skills activity is great for toddlers learning to pinch and grasp. Clothes pins aren’t easy for toddler’s to open – my son wasn’t able to work these until he was well over 2.5 years old.
During this activity, my son is working on so many skills:
- Hand eye coordination
- Grip strength
- Pinching and grasping
I love setting up simple activities like this for my son. It’s perfect for a quick toddler activity when you need to make dinner or get the dishes done. Plus with all the possible variations for this clothes pin activities, the future is bright with this simple set up!
